INSTRUCTIONAL MUSIC
The Instrumental Music Program at Orinda's four elementary schools offers an enriching opportunity for fourth and fifth-grade students to learn and perform music. With 200 students currently participating in Band or Orchestra, the program covers a variety of instruments, including the clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, violin, and cello. Percussionists are required to have prior training due to limited spots available.
This pull-out program operates during the regular school day, with classes held once a week for 35-40 minutes. Students are expected to practice for at least 80 minutes each week. To participate in the music program at OIS, students must have either two years of elementary music experience, one year of private lessons, or receive consent from the instructors.
Early in the school year, fourth and fifth graders attend an Introduction to Band assembly, followed by a sign-up sheet sent home with detailed information about instrument rentals, method books, and other essentials.
Learning to play an instrument requires dedication and discipline. Students must balance their practice time with their academic responsibilities.
Throughout the school year, the Band and Orchestra showcase their talents by performing at a school concert twice a year and often at an additional off-site concert.
